Never send a non-gamer into a RPG shop to ask for dice. It’s not a pretty sight.
I had brought some Yahtzee scorecards, but had conveniently forgotten the dice. You would think it wouldn’t be so hard to purchase dice in the middle of southern California, but you would be wrong, my friend. Very very wrong.
After being denied at the Ralph’s in Glendale, we’d spotted a mall along the freeway and made for the exit. After picking up some pillows at JcPenney’s (they forgot pillows), my brother made the mistake of going into a game store to purchase some dice.
Now, the non-gamer doesn’t understand why the salesperson is asking so many questions as to what size, type of die and what it’ll be used for.
“Dice! Damn it!” my brother exclaims. “I just want some regular dice! Five regular dice!”
“What are ya’ doin? Playing Yahtzee?” the employee jokes. I can imagine my brother’s eyes rolling way, way back into his head.
Turns out this place didn’t have regular dice at all. What they did have was a baggie of mini six-sided dice. My brother ended up getting them, but we didn’t play Yahtzee the entire time. Bah.
