Devil's Haircut

The whole experience of seeing Beck live was phenomenal. He's just so damn cool and sublime for the normal folk such as ourselves. Take for instance his opening act, McRorie. This guy is beyond description. His web site doesn't do him justice, but it gives you a little taste of the glory of McRorie (be sure to check out the posters!). He has refined his look somewhat by substituting the black lycra bike shorts with a black kilt (good move) and growing a scruffy goatee (another good move, he looks like a dumb jock without it), and as you'll see from the sample video, his range is craaaazy, from Dead or Alive's, "You Spin Me Round" (ok, I know I wasn't the only one who danced around in the living room when this video came on) to Twisted Sister to AC/DC to Young MC.

Next up were Le Tigre, who apparently gets good reviews, but I'm not sure why. They've apparently releasing music since 1999, which can't possibly be since none of them look older than my children. If you're so inclined, check out their web site (crappy Flash warning), which is about the same par of annoying as their music. There's only so much crappy, preachy, group-chanting preppy pop I can take. Props to them for their world view of peace, love and acceptance. But I can get that message in the first thirty seconds, I don't need the whole set. But hey, whatever I have to endure to get to Beck.

And speaking of Beck, what a show!!! He is all grades of cool. It would be hard for Beck to cover all the songs that I love, but he did cover a fair range of his work. Even my sweetie, who not familiar with the music, enjoyed the show. Of course, he tends to find the good in everything (although he did agree that Le Tigre was craptastic). Near the end, his band sat around this huge table chatting and playing the table and everything on it like an instrument, which was one of the coolest things I've seen live (excluding anything KISS related of course). And he played "Debra". Yeah. That was cool.

ps. Thanks to the Portland Mercury article for enlightening me about that "crazy guy in the kilt".

pss. Screw you OC b*tches!!!
