Some indie music musings...
Laura Viers: She gets lots of attention. The critics love her. I've tried and tried to like it, but I just can't. I want to to, but her music is poop. I give up.
Conner Obirst: I know all the emo kids love it, but I can't take it. His voice is like nails on a blackboard. C'mon Connor, if you're that tortured, just die already.
Tea for Julie: Even though I've known about them for some time (thye're from Portland), I haven't pursued their music as much as I should. I am a bad bad fan. They're amazing.
Sufjan Stevens: Indie's golden boy is starting to shy away from his own success. Who can blame him? He's at the top of every indie "best" list in the world – best album, best song, best artist, best plaque-removal system, etc. Normally I'm annoyed at artists racking up tons of accolades and awards because, while the artist may be good, they're usually not as great as all the hype makes them out to be (like, how the freak does Mariah "Fat Spoiled Ho" Carey get eight Garmmy noms? ICK!!!). Sufjan is the only exception I can think of to this rule. I don't know how he does it, but his music trips some obscure endorphin gland in my brain. He makes me swoon.
I meant to post about KEXP's Top 90.3 of 2005 a month ago. It's been a handly list. I use it when scouring the Internet for indie tracks to find artists that I enjoy enough to buy their CD's. I'll never be bored with music again...
