I hate when I get genius ideas to write a novel about. It’s frustrating. I love to write, but I'm probably not going to write a novel. Articles and short stories ok, but a 300-500 page novel isn't really in the cards. Mostly because it's a lot of work. Not that I'm lazy, but I’m just...well, you know. Lazy. I'm not fond of putting in a bunch of work if it doesn't go anywhere.

That being said, I read an article in The Oregonian about this one author who literally wrote something like 14 novels, none of them ever published, until Stephen King farted out some comment in a magazine some months back saying this author's novel was "the best novel you'll never read". Now he's f-ing world famous. They published that novel and will probably publish all his previous unpublished work as well. Does that guy understand that he's just done the equivalent of winning the lottery? He probably does. Anybody that has that kind of perseverance DESERVES a meeeelion dollars. They do it for love, not money. They're humble because they know the labor and rejection it takes to get there. If they ever get there. And once they get there, they probably still pinch themselves to see if they’re dreaming.

It's a tough biz to break into and I'm not going to make any money from it (other than being paid a salary for any work-related writing). But I do like writing for myself. I like this blog - like a journal but not as private (you know, because it is the internet). I enjoy the process of moving the thoughts from the inside to the outside of my mind. I think that's good enough for me right now. But who knows?

Honestly, that's the way you HAVE to do it 90% of the time. It's what I have to do with my art if I EVER make it. I need to make so many drawing and sculptures that I grow as an artist. Most of the stable "can live of it" artists are well into there 40's and did it for years for the love of it. We can hope to be the lucky ones but more than likely you won't, might as well enjoy yoru hobby while you do it then. Heck.. don't think about is as a book. Figure out the basic plot (it will change anyway) and figure out where you want each chapter. Do one of those between the short stories. Heck if it fits the idea make it a serial at least in layout.

PS. Sorry that my first post is a rantish thing. Promise the future ones with have more, how did you put it? Raz!
